Ice Hockey:
The Western scholastic men's hockey team won its third straight gold medal on Sunday, with a 3-2 win over Central.
Central entered the Western contest with a 3-0-1 record while Western was 4-0. With the game tied 2-2 in the final minutes, Central pulled its goalie because it needed a win for the gold medal. Western took advantage and Rochester's David Whitmore scored the game-winner with 57 seconds remaining.
Central finished with a 3-1-1 mark and the silver medal. Ithaca High's Brandon French and Loren Berkley both play for Central and had strong tournaments.
French finished the five-game event with six goals and two assists, getting at least a point in every game but the Western contest.
Saturday, French scored twice, including the game-winner, in Central's 5-2 win over Hudson Valley. He also had a goal and an assist in Central's 7-2 win over New York City, also on Saturday.
Berkley, a defenseman, finished with two assists, one against New York and another against Hudson Valley.
