Ithaca's hockey players set example

LETTERS

Many of your readers are probably already aware that a local PeeWee hockey team, the Ithaca Bears, recently played in the International Silver Stick Championships in Port Huron, Michigan.

They played in the championship game and came up just slightly short in 4-2 game which involved a late penalty shot and empty net goals. After playing so well for the entire game, the disappointment for these young boys must have been overwhelming.

At a moment when your emotions can emote either your worst or best side, I write to let your readers know that these kids and their coaches represented Ithaca in a manner which should make you very proud.

They conducted themselves on the ice and in the post game ceremonies, as they did off the ice all weekend, with quiet class and terrific sportsmanship. Your team congratulated our kids and coaches alike with comments such as, "well done," and, "nice job, coach."

When you really boil down what it is you want sports to teach our kids, these boys have made the grade with flying colors.

To the Ithaca Bear players, as anyone who watched the final game will tell you, there were no losers out there, just one team got to take home some extra hardware. You're an excellent hockey team and you represented your hometown in manner for which they can be proud.

Best of luck on the rest of what is already a great season.
